Emilio Villalba

Biography

Emilio Villalba is a San Francisco-based visual artist and educator. He received his BFA from the Art Institute of California in 2006 and worked briefly as a Visual Effects Artist before pursuing his MFA in painting from the Academy of Art University. Following his graduation, he spent a number of years re-evaluating his approach to painting, and the artistic process. Inspired by master painters such as Velázquez and Rembrandt during his art education, he also drew inspiration from contemporary realists such as Mark Tennant, John Wentz, and Alex Kanevsky. Emilio explains his work by saying, “My portraits are inspired by master works, as well as the contemporary human condition. They explore the dissonance created when the familiar is fractured and distorted by outside influence.”
