"Vessel" group exhibition

11 June - 2 July 2022 Hashimoto Contemporary LA
Overview

Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Vessel - a group exhibition inspired by the classical form and motif found throughout art history and contemporary art practices alike. Laden with symbolic meaning and layered with historical references, each of the artists’ works featured brings a fresh perspective to the archetypical form.

Utilizing a variety of mediums, from ceramics to oil painting to textile and wood works, each artist contemporizes the representation of the vessel. Sabrina Bockler’s decadent table-scapes are surreal reinterpretations of Dutch Golden Era still life painting, filled with intricately rendered detail. The heavily textured mixed media paintings by Julien Jaca (pictured above) are reminiscent of archeological pottery but are festooned with tattoo and pop culture iconography.

From Paa Joe’s fantastical coffins to Catalina Cheng’s queer coded porcelain pots, each depiction is unique. Every vessel takes a new form, adding to the eternal legacy while containing the history that came before.
