Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present I Know What You Did Last Summer: A Mid Career Retrospective, by Brooklyn-based artist Brian A. Whiteley. I Know What You Did Last Summer will be the artists first time exhibiting at Hashimoto Contemporary, which will highlight the various bodies of works and series the artist has been working on for the past decade.
Drawing inspiration from various sources, including his past and the current political climate, I Know What You Did Last Summer features infamous works from Brian A. Whiteley, as well as new works in a variety of medium, including painting, sculpture, fabric works and video works. The exhibition will be presented in a wood paneled installation, reminiscent of the suburban basement in Whiteley’s parents home, where he spent a majority of his formative years.
On view will be the notorious Trump Legacy Stone, which the artist created in 2016. The piece was initially placed in Central Park on Easter morning in 2016. The epitaph reads, “Made America Hate Again,” with the year of death left blank, serving as a reminder that the possibility remains for a more positive legacy.
The piece immediately went viral and led to a two month long secret service investigation, culminating in Whiteley being placed on the Secret Service watch list after interrogations. The piece, and its subsequent story has since been covered internationally by Hyperallergic, The New York Times, ARTnews, Time Magazine and more.
Other notable works on view will be The Vladimir Putin Presidential Portrait (White House in Background), which hung in Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel for a month and various clown suits from Whiteley’s video and cemetery performances.
Please join us Saturday, January 11th from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of I Know What You Did Last Summer: A Mid-Career Retrospective. The artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, February 1st.
