Gregory Euclide - "Extract"
Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Extract, a solo show of sculptures, paintings and relief works by Gregory Euclide. Following the artist’s recent exhibit at the South Dakota Art Museum, Extract expands upon the entanglement between natural and human-made elements within the landscape.
Based in the Minnesota River Valley, Euclide gathers organic matter from his everyday surroundings and reconstructs them alongside traditional art mediums, resulting in comprehensive vignettes that ebb and flow in waves of contrast. Placed within a new context, the artist’s varied materials make up miniaturized vistas, riddled with architectural geometry and abstract movement, often found trailing out of their own compositions. In the artist’s own words - “The forms fracture the pictorial space, at times, inhabiting the frames, robbing them of their ability to define a single view and inviting a phenomenological exploration by the viewer.”
Extract cultivates a quiet presence of human intervention in each rendered environment. A popular element implemented throughout the artist’s series is the Buckthorn root, a highly-invasive plant first brought to the US as a garden shrub, which Euclide manipulates for its dark pigment. Other works include a multitude of inorganic objects pulled from the land, such as styrofoam or discarded plastic. In addition to these unconventional forms of mark-making, Euclide also explores the structural foundations of each portrayal. "Something condensed from whole” is a large-scale sumi ink painting on whiteboard, which not only collides between the flat image and the found objects, but also calls attention to the historical weight and permanence of the sumi ink in context with the fleeting temperament of the white board.
Please join us for Extract, opening Thursday, April 7 with an evening reception from 6pm - 10pm, where the artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, April 23.
