Joy Harjo is an American poet, musician, playwright, and author. She is the incumbent United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold that honor. She is also only the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to serve three terms. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Nation and belongs to Oce Vpofv.
These portraits are part of Phillips’ larger collaborative series “Killing the Negative, where he has been working with a group of poets to respond to censored images from the Great Depression. These portraits of each poet in the project will eventually be published in a forthcoming book with Left Field Press.
